deltaThe Danube Delta is the second largest delta in Europe, being located in the land-sea junction between the Danube River and the Black Sea. It represents a very dynamic system, affected by an important subsidence process along with a dynamic landscape of wetlands. As a consequence, mapping and monitoring are necessary tasks to consider for a proper environmental management and preservation.

By using InSAR, TERRASIGNA (former ASRC) has monitored and mapped Danube Delta, providing high quality information for a better understanding of the short and long term ground deformation and a ground dynamics model.

TERRASIGNA also processes aerial and satellite image data provided by optical instruments for change detection, the following aspects being emphasized:

  • the effects of the fluctuation of the sea level on the habitat conditions for various species of wildlife;
  • the effects of heavy infrastructure development on the newest formed land in Europe and its impact on the habitat.

Interest in Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve of universal value is also given by the European Space Agency.
